Singer, composer, producer, DJ, poet, arranger, Afro Brazillian percussionist,
Bembe Segue’s influences range from Doug & Jean Carn and pretty much
anything on the Black Jazz & Strata East labels, fusing Brazillian and Afro Cuban
beats with an ever present hip hop darkness. Throw in a bit of 60’s folk and
Charles Stepney-esque vocal arrangements and you might just begin to get the
beginnings of the picture of her musical soundscapes.
A vinyl junkie from the age of 14 the vinyl was her education and she is the proud
owner of a much revered and still growing vinyl collection.
Bembe was an intrinsic part of the vibe that created the West London Broken Beat
scene working extensively with Orin Walters * Daz `IQ – Bugz In The Attic, Mark de
Clive-Lowe,Da Lata,Nicola Conte, Sleepwalker, KJM, Kaidi Tatham etc as well as
appearing on Seiji and G-force’s album Just Another number.
That and her multiple collaborations with I.G Culture and Dego led to her being
fondly appointed the mantle “Queen of Broken Beat” however her music is much
much more diverse than just that sound.
She went on to form her own 14 piece band whose legendary 2003 Jazz Cafe
performance of Mother of the Future is still much played today after Phil Asher
starting playing out a sneaked version from the show recording many moons ago.
Bembe is now a much seasoned live performer who has tours globally and
continues to love to entertain a crowd.
